Black Mamba
Africa’s most feared snake, the Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis), isn’t named for its skin color but for the inky black interior of its mouth, which it flashes as a warning. Growing up to 14 feet long, it can move at around 12 mph in short bursts, making escape on foot unreliable. What makes it truly deadly is its striking behavior: it can bite up to 12 times in rapid succession, with each strike injecting potent neurotoxins. An untreated bite carries close to a 100 percent fatality rate, with death possible within 15 minutes in severe cases. The venom attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis, respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest in sequence.
